Chapter Twelve
Scott
It took forever to get to sleep that first night, but I finally drifted off around two in the morning. The next morning, the antique grandfather clock woke me with its brassy chime. I had fallen asleep with my head on Parker's lap. He was writing in his notebook with his right hand. His left played absently in my hair. I should have gotten up right away, but I just couldnât. I was glued to him. His thighs were tight but soft to lay on. His citrus scent soothed me. I was tempted to close my eyes and drift back off but I couldnât, not yet. I lifted my eyes to his.
âBuddy?â I said. I surprised him, and he stopped stroking my head. I wished he would keep going. He did, at least, give me his trademark smile.
"Just talked to the vet. He's doing great. Drinking water and even taking a few nibbles of food.â
"A few nibbles?â He shrugged one shoulder, but his eyes were full of joy.
"Maybe a few big bites.â
"What time is it?â
âEleven-sixteen.â
"Oh no, I have to get to work.â I started to sit up but Parker pushed me back down. Back onto his lap. Back into the warm cocoon of his scent.
âI already called them. Youâre good.â
"You're a God.â
âOnly if I can be Apollo. He was the hot one.â I chuckled and arched my back, stretching like a cat.
âYou can be whoever you the heck want.â My stomach rumbled.
"I got that covered, too.â He fired off a text. Less than five minutes later Beckett glided out of the Caf with a steaming pile of fried eggs, ham, and almost-burnt toast. "Simple, but your favorites and lots of âem.â
âBon appetit, dude,â Beck said, full of his normal cheerful chill.
I shifted to take the plate, but I wasnât ready to move away from Parkerâs touch, not just yet.
âYou even burnt my toast the way I like it. You get to be Zeus, the king of the gods.â
âMy headâs gonna get so inflated I'll hot-air-balloon right out of here, never to be seen again.â
Don't go. The words snapped into my conscious, and almost spilled out of my mouth. That moment I realized that if Parker ever left me, Iâd fall apart.
âParker, I-â I love you. I stopped myself just short of saying it.
âHmm?â He asked.
I dipped my finger in the sweet blob of magenta on the plate and tasted it. âI like this jam you bought. What is it, boysenberry?â
âYup. Mads recommended it. Itâs organic.â
âIâm still tired.â Feeling your hands on me is more important than eating.
âThen the food can wait.â He took the plate and set it on the coffee table with a clink of the fork. I relaxed my head back down and he massaged my scalp again. I lapped it up, enjoying every stroke of his fingers.
Parker fawned over me all day, then came to visit Buddy with me. Buddy was in much better spirits, wagging and moving around, still happy-go-lucky in spite of his cone of shame.
